Sustainable Development
Given the social relevance of healthcare and the impact Mediclinic has on our stakeholders, our Group is firmly committed to managing our business in a sustainable manner. As a Group we are committed to upholding the highest standards of ethics and corporate governance practices. We believe that not only will this create business integrity, but that we will also stand to gain from the many benefits of sustainability such as maintaining and improving the confidence, trust and respect of our stakeholders, improved access to capital by providing a responsibile investment proposition, and the increased ability to attract and retain staff.

Doing business sustainably is a way of life for Mediclinic and management is continually focused on integrating sustainability with the Group's strategy, risk management and performance, and is supported by the Group Sustainable Development Policy, Group Envrionmental Policy and Group Social Affairs Policy.

Our commitment to our stakeholders to conduct our business in a responsible and sustainable way and to respond to their needs is entrenched in our vision and values and supported by the Group Code of Business Conduct and Ethics. The nature of our business implies close engagement with our stakeholders (which include our employees, patients, supporting doctors, investors, healthcare funders, suppliers, industry and other associations and government) and we strive to achieve this through a wide variety of communication methods. We regard this as fundamental in maintaining a positive corporate reputation.

Based on the feedback from our stakeholders and what management regards as material, the following key focus areas have been identified and are addressed in the Sustainable Development Report included in our latest annual report:

•  Promoting access to and affordability of healthcare
•  Quality
•  Employee training and development
•  Addressing the shortage of nurses and general skills shortage
•  Corporate social investment/community involvement
•  Broad-based black economic empowerment (South Africa only)
•  Reducing and/or managing our environmental impacts
